My World
TM
For Grades 3-5

Developed by teams of educators, scientists and health specialists at Baylor College of Medicine, My World educational materials provide students and teachers with significant knowledge of the environment and its relationship to human health.

Each inquiry-based My World unit focuses on a different aspect of environmental health science, and is aligned with the National Science Education Standards and National Health Education Standards.

The five components of each My World unit help students understand important health and environmental health concepts. Each unit is comprised of the following components.

Adventures presents the adventures of Riff and Rosie in an illustrated storybook that also teaches science and health concepts.

Teacher's Guide presents inquiry-based lessons that entice students to discover concepts in science, mathematics and health through hands-on activities.

Explorations is a colorful mini-magazine full of information, activities and fun things for children and adults to do in class or at home.

The Reading Link provides language arts activities related to each storybook.

The Math Link extends each unit by connecting the adventure story and hands-on science activities to mathematics skill-building and critical thinking exercises.

My World materials offer flexibility and versatility and are adaptable to a variety of grade levels, and teaching and learning styles. All My World publications undergo rigorous analysis, including science content and pedagogy reviews from national advisors, and national pilot testing among trained teachers and their students, who use the materials in their classrooms for six weeks. My World materials have been adopted nationally.

My Home Planet Earth (Global Resources) National Traveling Exhibit
Funded by a Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA) from the National Center for Research Resources, National Institutes of Health, and created by The Children's Museum of Houston (CMH) in partnership with Baylor College of Medicine, the My Home Planet Earth traveling exhibit is at CMH in Houston for the summer. In the exhibit, children and adults learn why the choices they make today regarding food, water and air have a profound impact tomorrow on their health and the health of the environment.

In the exhibit, characters Riff, Rosie and Mr. Slaptail, from Baylor College of Medicine's My World series, take visitors on an exciting, fun-filled journey through the fictional town of Bright Water Corners. With hands-on activities throughout the exhibit, visitors view dust through microscopes, play a pinball game to keep dust particle balls at bay, and check out Riff's lung model to learn how lungs work. Visitors also help Riff and Rosie figure out why their marsh is polluted, analyze samples from a well, learn how animals are affected by water pollution and find out what can be done to keep water clean. Special activites include family learning events and teacher workshops.

For more information on the exhibit and activities, visit the The Children's Museum of Houston's web site.
